We all love to teach, and love teaching well even more! Every now and then we ask ourselves ‘I thought we had done that, but the students aren’t doing it and haven’t remembered it.’ We feel something between professional disappointment and a desire to be on a distant island alone, staring at the blue sea.
Train The Teacher ran a Meetup at Hong Kong Teachers to respond to a request from a tutorial center on this question: How do we improve retention? The event was very enjoyable with the teachers demonstrating high awareness of pedagogy, and some great memorization skills. They were asked to listen to a long list of numbers and remember them. One teacher, Miguel, had perfect recall!
The training event covered memorization tasks, and looked at answering these questions: What is learning? Why do we forget? What is memory? Is language skill development a different kind of learning? What are the general principles for a teacher looking to improve retention? What techniques can we use to retain learning? How is motivation related to learning?
