Leading your students to a bright future

As tutors, we think of problems we have to resolve for the benefit of our learners. And our sense of responsibility around leads us to comment on major issues that the world is facing.

Quite reasonably we can identify such things as climate change - a very large factor in our students’ future; awareness of disinformation; changes in probable job markets in the future; the potentials for conflict internationally; and the prospect of more epidemics.

We identify these because part of our profession is to raise awareness of the challenges of the world that we all live in.

However, too much attention to these without a corresponding description of how to deal with an ever-changing world can lead not only our students but ourselves into a negative outlook on our futures.

In my opinion this is a debilitating approach to offer to our students and to the next generation. It is necessary for us as tutors to provide strategies that will enable our students to survive through what are undoubtedly very large challenges going forward.

While all cultures develop approaches to life some of these are not necessarily suited to the priorities we have now. It is important for us to find a contemporary and rational series of strategies that we can suggest to our students for the future. And the strategies and the attitude that goes with them are something we can model in how we teach. Leading students to a bright future can start with what we do as teachers.

The fundamentals are clear: happiness works (see the famous Harvard 85 year study on happiness https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/10/85-year-harvard-study-found-the-secret-to-a-long-happy-and-successful-life.html ), thrift works, eating healthy food works, and exercise works. But in 2023 we need more, and having a sense of purpose and reward independent of what happens in the world around us is now a necessity.

People who have interests, and particularly those who enjoy them in a group connection, generate a sense of personal value and development that not only contributes to their sense of well-being but also the well-being of the groups they are in.

As tutors, problems are something that we should raise awareness of, but simultaneously we must focus on leading students to a bright future by developing interests around hobbies, science, music, arts, crafts, literature, music, or activities of this ilk.
